It is a waste product left over from the liver breaking down amino acids in proteins. It is made up of nitrogen in ammonia and excreted through urine.
High amounts may indicate dehydration, gastrointestinal bleeding, diabetes mellitus, urinary tract obstruction, or heart failure
Low amounts may indicate liver disease or pregnancy.
