AFP. Some fetal deformities, such as neural tube defects, kidney anomalies, omphalocele, intrauterine mortality, and conditions that result in values above the usual values for the
corresponding age of the pregnancy, can be diagnosed by measuring it.
In screening techniques, it acts as a tumour marker and assists in the detection of liver cancer.

Home Instructions
AFP sample should be taken in the morning and before taking medication. Please refrain from taking biotin supplements for 2 days before the day of sample collection.
For the the best samples, we suggest:
- Staying hydrated before taking a sample.
- Taking a warm shower to improve blood flow.
- Doing light exercise.
- Shaking the test tube gently instead of violently.
- Avoiding a hard squeeze on the finger.
- Not leaving the sample to sit for more than a day to prevent clotting.

How does the examination work?
To analyze and receive Liver Cancer results:
- Access the link provided in the written instructions on the test kit.
- Collect samples according to instructions.
- Put the collected sample into the provided additional box.
- Locate the nearest drop box through the Royal Mail app.
- Place the box into the drop box to be delivered and analyzed.
- Receive your results in 1-3 days.

How long do I need to wait for my Liver results?
The typical turnaround time is 1 working day. Do note that while we aim to give you results as quickly as possible, the exact result processing time may vary. For £50, a while-you-wait option is also offered.
We suggest taking your sample from Monday to Thursday to avoid delivery delays from our laboratory.

The relative standard deviation from the target value is ≤ 15%. The within-assay CV is less than or equal to 15 %. The between-assay CV is ≤ 15%.

In range results:
The reference range for healthy females and males is less than 20 ng/mL.
Out-of-range results:
Any result greater than the reference range would be considered abnormal. Those with elevated levels of AFP may be at risk for small-cell lung type cancer. Elevated levels of may also indicate other cancers including Hodgkin’s disease, lymphoma, and kidney cancer.
