Bilirubin Details
Sample (blood) taken at home through finger pricking. Our Bilirubin Blood Test detects a biomarker which indicates bilirubin levels present in blood.
Bilirubin is a substance produced by bile as a result of the liver destroying dysfunctional red blood cells and helps digest food. It is a waste product excreted from the body.
A bilirubin test allows assessment of liver function and the presence of conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, anaemia, and gallstones. Certain foods, alcohol, or medication may cause high bilirubin levels. High bilirubin levels commonly cause jaundice.
This exam detects a biomarker indicating the level of:
- Total bilirubin in blood.
Instructions
Sample should be taken in the morning and before taking medication. Please refrain from taking biotin supplements for 2 days before the day of sample collection.
For the the best samples, we suggest:
- Staying hydrated before taking a sample.
- Taking a warm shower to improve blood flow.
- Doing light exercise.
- Shaking the test tube gently instead of violently.
- Avoiding a hard squeeze on the finger.
- Not leaving the sample to sit for more than a day to prevent clotting.

How does the exam work?
To analyze and receive results:
- Access the link provided in the written instructions on the test kit.
- Collect samples according to instructions.
- Put the collected sample into the provided additional box.
- Locate the nearest drop box through the Royal Mail app.
- Place the box into the drop box to be delivered and analyzed.
- Receive your results in 1-3 days.
Order your test kit and collect your sample at home.
Drop off the sample in the Royal Mail Red Street Box. Use the Track 24/48 return label to the laboratory.
Receive your results through email or by opening your dashboard on our site.
How long do I need to wait for my results?
The typical turnaround time is 1-3 days. Do note that while we aim to give you results as quickly as possible, the exact result processing time may vary. We are committed to following strict guidelines to ensure quick and accurate results, including staff training, audits, logging, and quality control. The close proximity of our laboratory to our clinic allows us to instantly analyze samples.
We suggest taking your sample from Monday to Thursday to avoid delivery delays from our laboratory.

Total Bilirubin: The approximate error is < ± 10%. The within-assay CV is ≤ 2.53%. The between-assay CV is ≤ 2.80%.

1.71~684 umol/L
Accuracy and precision:
- The accuracy relies on the approximate error percentage, which is the percentage deviation from the actual result.
- The precision relies on the within-assay coefficient of variations and the between-assay coefficient.
- The within-assay coefficient of variations is the variance of the result value if the same sample was analysed again.
- The between assay coefficient is the variance of the result value if the same sample was reprocessed from the beginning.
In range results:
3.4~20.5 umol/L
Out-of-range results:
Any result outside the listed reference ranges would be considered abnormal and may be a sign of liver disease or liver damage, and should be consulted with your GP.
