Bilirubin Home Kit Details
Sample (blood) taken at home through finger pricking. Our Bilirubin Blood Test detects a biomarker which indicates bilirubin levels present in blood.
It is a substance produced by bile as a result of the liver destroying dysfunctional red blood cells and helps digest food. It is a waste product excreted from the body.
A bilirubin test allows assessment of liver function and the presence of conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, anaemia, and gallstones. Certain foods, alcohol, or medication may cause high bilirubin levels. High bilirubin levels commonly cause jaundice.
This exam detects a biomarker indicating the level of:
- Total bilirubin in blood.
Kit Use Instructions
Bilirubin sample should be taken in the morning and before taking medication. Please refrain from taking biotin supplements for 2 days before the day of sample collection.
For the the best samples, we suggest:
- Staying hydrated before taking a sample.
- Taking a warm shower to improve blood flow.
- Doing light exercise.
- Shaking the test tube gently instead of violently.
- Avoiding a hard squeeze on the finger.
- Not leaving the sample to sit for more than a day to prevent clotting.
Why should you check your Bilirubin levels with us?
- Direct laboratory prices and support.
- Fast results and prescriptions.
- CE-certified sensitive PCR laboratory equipment for accurate tests.
- Pre-paid Royal Mail delivery.
- WhatsApp support during business hours.
How do I get and complete the evaluation?
To analyze and receive results:
- Access the link provided in the written instructions on the test kit.

Order your Bilirubin test kit and collect your sample at home.
Drop off the sample in the Royal Mail Red Street Box. Use the Track 24/48 return label to the laboratory.
Receive your results through email or by opening your dashboard on our site.
How long do I need to wait for my results?
The typical Bilirubin test turnaround time is 1-3 days. Do note that while we aim to give you results as quickly as possible, the exact result processing time may vary. We are committed to following strict guidelines to ensure quick and accurate results, including staff training, audits, logging, and quality control. The close proximity of our laboratory to our clinic allows us to instantly analyze samples.
We also provide a while-you-wait service for a fee of £50.
However, it is important to remember to remove your sample on the same day. Do not retain it after the tube has been filled. Additionally, ensure that the collection box time fits for your timetable. Do make sure that you deliver it a few minutes prior to the collection time, rather than after it.
We suggest taking your sample from Monday to Thursday to avoid delivery delays from our laboratory.
What are some common questions?
Q: What is the nature of this pigment?
A: It is a fluid that is produced by the liver and aids in the digestion of food.
Q: What is the rationale behind this sampling process?
A: To ascertain the levels of Billirubin in your blood. Jaundice, which results in a yellowing of the skin and eyes, can be caused by an elevated blood sugar level.
Q: What are the signs and symptoms of elevated levels?
A: The primary symptoms may include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, heartburn, constipation, vertigo, and yellowing of the skin and eyes.
Q: What are the potential hazards associated with elevated levels?
A: A diverse array of conditions, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, haemolytic anemia, liver cancer, and gallstones, are characterized by elevated levels.
Q: What can result in elevated levels?
A: Specific foods, medications, or physical activity.
Q: What are some methods for reducing elevated levels?
A: To reduce your levels, it is recommended that you maintain hydration, refrain from consuming alcohol, consume a nutritious diet, consume a lot of fruits and vegetables, and increase your fiber intake by consuming wholegrain bread, brown rice, and potatoes.
Bilrubin Scientific Data from Suppliers (Instrument and Reagent)
Method:
Fully automatic biochemistry analyser.
Detection limit:
1.71 umol/L
Accuracy and precision:
Total Bilirubin: The approximate error is < ± 10%. The within-assay CV is ≤ 2.53%. The between-assay CV is ≤ 2.80%.
Measuring range:
1.71~684 umol/L
Accuracy and precision:
- The accuracy relies on the approximate error percentage, which is the percentage deviation from the actual result.
- The precision relies on the within-assay coefficient of variations and the between-assay coefficient.
- The within-assay coefficient of variations is the variance of the result value if the same sample was analysed again.
- The between assay coefficient is the variance of the result value if the same sample was reprocessed from the beginning.
In range results:
3.4~20.5 umol/L
Out-of-range results:
Any result outside the listed reference ranges would be considered abnormal and may be a sign of liver disease or liver damage, and should be consulted with your GP.

A shared story of Billirubin
A mother who is afflicted with a rare disease discusses the manner in which she integrates therapies and her children.
Beatrice provides an explanation of Crigler-Najjar Syndrome and the significance of experimental therapies and research.
Beatrice, who was born in Manchester, is 39 years old and the mother of three children: Leonardo (10 years old), Samuel (8 years old), and Giosuè (one month old). However, she experienced health issues from the moment she was born. Additionally, she exhibits altered liver values within a few days of birth. However, she will not be able to identify this peculiar illness until a considerable amount of time has passed.
Crigler-Najjar Syndrome is an uncommon disease that remains incurable to this day.
Phototherapy, in conjunction with pharmacological support or liver transplantation, is the sole treatment available following a positive test. Phototherapy enables patients to resume a relatively typical lifestyle by restoring the altered values. We were able to learn more about Beatrice’s beautiful story of courage, great challenges, and colossal results as a result of the spring Io per Leidi Telethon campaign, which was specifically dedicated to “rare mothers.”
What is Crigler-Najjar Syndrome?
It is an uncommon condition that affects the metabolism of bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cells. UGT, a mutated enzyme, is responsible for the preparation of this substance for physiological elimination by binding its molecules to carbohydrates. The condition is the result of a deficiency or defective functioning of this enzyme. Consequently, accumulation occurs, which, due to its toxic nature, must be eliminated from the body to avert severe repercussions, such as cerebral coma-induced mortality.
This genetic disorder manifests in two distinct varieties.
The enzyme is entirely absent in type 1, the most severe form (the one from which I suffer). It is distinguished by the presence of elevated levels of unconjugated bilirubin, which results in severe and early jaundice during the neonatal period. Nevertheless, the enzymatic deficiency in type 2 is only partial. As a result, serum levels are reduced, and residual enzymatic activity persists. In this scenario, phototherapy may be administered for a shorter duration.
However, how can you maintain control over it?
Individuals who are affected typically undergo routine examinations. Many individuals who are also afflicted by Crigler-Najjar Syndrome are compelled to sleep nude under large phototherapy lamps for 8-10 hours each night. Additionally, this is a blue light with a specific wavelength that has been identified as having the same function as the UGT enzyme I previously mentioned.
Counseling and Assistance
I was able to establish myself in the workforce, study, and experience the typical adolescent experiences thanks to this therapy and my father’s unwavering support. I was able to live “almost normally.” I am a biotechnology researcher and have established a family with three children. Nevertheless, the process of administering phototherapy was not always straightforward. The lamps that were available during my childhood were cumbersome and had a limited beneficial effect.
Consequently, I was compelled to make numerous sacrifices.
Velio, my father, transformed the lives of myself and others with Crigler-Najjar Syndrome by constructing seven phototherapy lamps that were progressively more compact and functional, thereby making them accessible for excursions and travel. Previously, lamps were cumbersome and fragile. However, my father developed a portable lamp that could be stored in a trolley. Nevertheless, it is a different existence. It is essential to have this specialized trolley and locate a small, heated chamber when sleeping away from home, as phototherapy must be conducted without clothing.
