CA125 & Ovarian Cancer Details
Sample (blood) taken at home through finger pricking. Our CA 12-5 / CA125 Ovarian Cancer & Tumour Marker Blood Test detects a biomarker to evaluate ovarian tumour markers and cancer.
CA 12-5 is an antigen found in higher levels when ovarian cancer cells are present. It can be found in the epithelium of many organs, but mainly the ovary. Its levels can be used in the diagnosis and monitoring of ovarian cancer and acts as a tumour marker. Proper diagnosis aided by these detections will greatly help in administering proper treatment.
This exam detects a biomarker indicating the levels of:
- CA 12-5
Our equipment provides reference values with reagents. Values may vary across equipment.
Elevated Levels
Levels are elevated in cancers, such as: Uterine cervical; fallopian tube; pancreatic; breast; colorectal; lung; gastric, etc.
The examination indicates that there are elevated levels in non-cancerous conditions, such as:
Menstruation, task, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, non-cancerous ovarian lesions, uterine fibroids, and other conditions.
A decrease in level during treatment typically indicates that the disease is responding to treatment. This may indicate that the disease is not responding to treatment if the levels remain constant or increase during treatment.
Additional considerations:
Neoplastic diseases rank second in terms of global mortality rates. Nevertheless, efforts have been made to identify a malignant cell transformation as soon as feasible. Tumor markers are the substances.
These can be categorized into two categories: humoral and cellular. Conversely, cell markers are represented by antigens situated at the cell membrane level (cell markers in leukemias) and hormonal or growth factor receptors.
Additionally, numerous organs, including the ovary, stomach, colon, kidneys, bronchi, and gallbladder, contain CA125 (tumor antigen). It is present in amniotic fluid, high concentrations of serum in expectant women, and breast milk.
Other conditions may be indicated by elevated levels. The test does not identify women who are at a minimal risk of developing the disease. It is intended for women who have already been diagnosed with the condition, with the intention of facilitating the establishment of effective treatment or the identification of recurrence.
Diagnosis Exam
The marker is instrumental in the diagnosis and monitoring of a variety of cancers. It is also regarded as a secondary marker for endocervical, endometrial, tubal, pulmonary, and pancreatic diseases.
Additionally, the examination of disease diagnosis, prognosis evaluation, and treatment. Nevertheless, it is capable of distinguishing between a benign process and a malignant condition in the presence of a pelvic mass.
An examination that is most suitable for the following scenarios:
- If the physician suspects that a disease is present in the body,
- to determine whether the treatment is effective;
- and to determine whether it has recurred after treatment.
Additionally, there are circumstances and conditions that, in addition to ovarian disease, may result in an increase in levels:
Diverticulitis, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, inflammatory bowel disease, menstruation, liver diseases, pelvic inflammatory disease, peritonitis, task, recent surgical intervention, and ruptured ovarian cyst.
Consequently, the physician may suggest a laboratory test to screen for the condition in an individual with a family history. For individuals who are at a very high risk, certain physicians may suggest that this exam be conducted in conjunction with a transvaginal ultrasound every six months.
