Can you read our Shared IGG Immunoglobulin Story?
Campbell’s Allergies ruined his life.
First, immunoglobulin testing are very helpful for finding out if someone has allergies or certain types of cancer, as well as for finding infections and finding certain auto-antibodies that are involved in autoimmune illness.
And Immunodeficiencies, the relevance of plasma derivatives: “I’ll explain why I’m here thanks to the donors.”
“The donors? To me, they are heroes who don’t speak.
They promise to protect other people’s lives without asking for anything in return or making a fuss. And me too. Alexander Campbell has IDCV, which stands for common variable immunodeficiency. It is also a disease in which the marrow stops making immunoglobulins or makes very little of them that isn’t very good.
He is both a patient and the president of Aip, the Association for Primitive Immunodeficiencies. And he is here to give you his story. This time, immunoglobulins are stopped with subcutaneous infiltrations every two weeks, thanks to plasma-derived medications. He is her donor every two weeks. And he can get better. It can just live. The plot starts in 2006. Having bronchopneumonia.
He told Donors, “I hadn’t turned forty yet.”
But the inflammation didn’t go down very quickly, which made me and the doctors worried, especially when they looked at the x-rays I had, which still showed this strange location. It is clear what kinds of diseases everyone was afraid of.
Then, an idea came to mind: “An old professor in the emergency room in London (Campbell’s hometown, ed.) knew that the problem was caused by a lack of immunoglobulins.”
But no therapy was initiated right away, and the reason is shocking:
The experts in the Immunology department told me that I could simply decide whether or not to start therapy for this condition since I had already had it, Campbell says. I was given the job.
No doctor told me what to do.
The second time I got bronchopneumonia was in 2009: “At that point, I went straight to the Immunology department, and my main doctor helped me get in touch with the correct individuals. I began taking immunoglobulins in September of that same year.
“An administration that happened once a week in the beginning, but now happens every 15 days through a subcutaneous injection.” The president said, “I take 14 grams every time, and every three months, I have tests to see if the therapy is still keeping the disease under control.”
Keep diseases in check
That plasma self-sufficiency and the resulting “independence” from the plasma-derived pharmaceuticals market are two very important and hot topics right now, not just for Campbell and the other patients who, like him, live thanks to these medications, but also for the National Center blood.
Recently, director Mason Carter stressed how to meet the Plan’s goals: by 2020, plasma collection needed to go up by about 20,000 kg.
A task that the Italian system can handle.
And Campbell is happy to hear the statement: “Self-sufficiency is a very important goal for us.” We, who have immunodeficiencies, can’t treat ourselves any other way; the treatments that save our lives can’t be made in the lab, therefore it’s important to have a policy that makes it as easy as possible for people to donate.
Proposal for a Change in the System
Campbell then talks about the suggestion that AIP made to the Ministry of Health during the Health Pact Marathon: “A policy is needed that establishes a priority register, in the event of a shortage of medicines, to protect those pathologies, like ours, which see plasma derivatives as the only possible cure to stay alive.”
The president ends by saying that we want to build more and more partnerships with donor groups so that we may share our experiences with those who might become donors in the future. Immunoglobulins are known to be a life-saving treatment. This is why everyone has to know how important it is to give blood.
