An Account from an Individual with a Nut Allergy
Under what circumstances might a nut be fatal?
Nut allergies might manifest unexpectedly and necessitate emergency medical attention for the affected individual.
Testimonial from a somebody experiencing distress.
I vividly recall that day in May 2013 when I jeopardized my life for the first time because to a walnut.
I was aware that nut allergies can be potentially fatal;
Nevertheless, having been habituated to consuming substantial amounts of nuts, it had not even crossed my mind that they would pose a risk to my health. On that day, the circumstances abruptly transformed.
I had a dinner appointment with a friend; I ordered spaghetti with walnut pesto.
Thus far, all proceedings have transpired seamlessly. Subsequent to supper, we proceeded to a bar to enjoy a beverage accompanied by fresh strawberries. The initial symptoms manifested there:
My scalp and hands began to pruritate, and my eyelids became edematous; his face reddened and developed erythematous lesions.
Subsequently, he experienced excruciating pruritus across his entire body. I abandoned the beverage and promptly hurried home. Fortunately, I resided in close proximity at that time.
Impaired vision
Upon arriving home, I took a cold shower to alleviate the itching, but it proved ineffective.
My heart raced uncontrollably, and abruptly, I perceived complete darkness. In an instant, I became blind yet remained aware.
I shouted towards the living room, where my then-boyfriend was: “Assist me, I can no longer see anything!” He responded, “However, if your eyes are open!”Recognizing the gravity of the situation, he contacted Triemli, where the medical staff informed him that we needed to proceed to the emergency room without delay.
Diagnosis: second-degree anaphylaxis
Upon my arrival at the emergency room, the process proceeded rapidly; I ceased completing the admittance paperwork upon disclosing information on the walnut pesto and fresh strawberries.
Those surrounding me exhibited unusual agitation: medical personnel were summoned, I was promptly administered an antihistamine and cortisone, my blood pressure was assessed, and I was left with the sensation that everyone was concerned, observing me intently. During those instances, I remained oblivious to the circumstances affecting me.
A Surprise Celebration
Following a tumultuous evening characterized by frequent blood pressure assessments every five minutes, the physicians confirmed the diagnosis of anaphylactic shock.
This is the most severe type of allergic reaction, characterized by four distinct levels of intensity.
My injury was classified as second-degree. This indicates that my immune system responded extremely aggressively to the allergen. In my instance, walnuts were significant, although strawberries likely contributed as well. Besides food, insect stings and pharmaceuticals can induce anaphylactic shock, potentially resulting in death.
Therapeutic Intervention
During my hospitalization, I was apprised that the procedure would not be straightforward. I was unaware that a food allergy might manifest unexpectedly and resolve just as swiftly — I was 33 years old. However, the test results revealed the reality to me.
To safeguard oneself, it is imperative to evade the allergen. I was provided with cortisone tablets and antihistamines for mild symptoms, and an EpiPen for more serious reactions.
I am grateful that I never had to utilize them.
Nonetheless, I have utilized the first aid kit two or three times now. I consistently carry it with me, and it is available for purchase at all pharmacies.
Acupuncture is one method to alleviate nut allergies. In 2014, I underwent acupuncture treatment for three months. I performed the task biweekly, but I cannot ascertain its efficacy. I could ascertain by consuming some nuts, but that moment traumatized me, so I was disinclined to attempt it.
Remain vigilant while buying.
Graubünden walnut cake was my preferred dessert until recently, as I can no longer consume it. During grocery shopping, I meticulously examine the ingredient list to avoid experiencing that trauma again, and I have been astonished by the prevalence of nuts in various food products. To my astonishment, hazelnuts and pistachios are extensively utilized. Dining out at restaurants or visiting friends and relatives is quite burdensome, as I must constantly tell others of my allergy.
There exist walnuts and walnuts.
I abstained from consuming nuts for an extended period due to my fear of experiencing another reaction. I conducted study on nut allergies to ascertain the consequences of consuming them multiple times.
I tolerate peanuts and almonds effectively, which may elicit severe reactions in certain individuals. Additionally, I do not have an allergy to trace amounts of nuts. Each individual with allergies is distinct.
What actions should be taken upon receiving a positive examination result?
The greatest danger arises when one is unaware of their allergies. You also lack any medication available to manage a reaction if it occurs. Nonetheless, you may transport some with you if necessary.
It is imperative to contact an emergency physician or proceed to the emergency department if you exhibit any symptoms. Every second is crucial in this scenario and can determine the difference between life and death.
